[ARCHIVED] Resident Uses Art to Support Other Students

Kenward 3Kenward 1Kenward 2Deerfield resident Sara Kenward is a rising senior at the University of Michigan, pursuing a BFA degree in Art & Design and minor in Community Action Social Change (CASC) in the School of Social Work. Since having to return earlier than expected from a study abroad experience in London, she has been collaborating with fellow University of Michigan undergraduate students to create graphics for the COVID-19 Student Support Instagram.

The COVID-19 Student Support Instagram (@covid19studentsupport) supports and advocates for students nationwide. The account is managed by University of Michigan undergraduate students and is sponsored by the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. The account has three goals: to share scientific evidence-based COVID-19 information, to support student mental and physical well-being, and to address common student COVID-19 questions and concerns.

“Overall, this account aims to provide support for students, by students,” Kenward said. “We hope this account gives students a way to navigate this trying and unprecedented time by acknowledging the stressors students are facing and promoting ways to cope with these difficulties.”

“Creating graphics allows me to incorporate my passions for art and design with community engagement and social justice,” Kenward said. “I am fascinated by what lies at the intersection of art, design, and positive social change. I understand that art is a valuable part of cross-cultural understanding, as it empowers and brings people together.”
