Southlake Mosquito Abatement District to Perform Mosquito Control Treatment Tonight; West Nile Virus Detected

Based on a third West Nile Virus positive mosquito collection in the Village, the Southlake Mosquito Abatement District will be performing a ground-based adult mosquito control treatment this evening, August 20, in the eastern portion of Deerfield (see map below). The application will occur after 10 p.m., weather permitting.

All Village residents on the District’s prior notification list will receive an automated call, text or email this afternoon. Any resident may register to be notified prior to future adult mosquito control applications at www.slmad.org or the mosquito hotline at 800.942.2555.

You can take extra precautions against mosquitoes and West Nile by practicing the three Rs:

Repel – If outdoors when mosquitoes are active, apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.
Report – Report locations where you see water sitting stagnant for more than 3-5 days, such as roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes at www.clarkeportal.com.
Reduce – Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut. Eliminate, or refresh each week, all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other containers.
