Wind Chill Warnings have been reported for Lake and Cook Counties from approximately 6 p.m. tonight to noon on Thursday. Wind chills as low as -50 and -55 are expected and can quickly cause frostbite and hypothermia. Be sure to remain inside or take extra safety precautions and bundle up in layers if you must go outside. Get more winter weather safety tips here.

Warming Shelters

In the event of a power outage, Village Hall and the Deerfield Police Department lobby (850 Waukegan Road) are available as warming shelters during business hours. After hours, the Police Department is available with limited services, but further warming shelter locations will be made available to those in need.

Check on your Neighbors and Pets

Remember to check on your neighbors and the elderly during this time. Also take extra precautions regarding your pets.

It is important to monitor the status and changes of the hazardous winter spell via weather broadcasts.

Waste Management Refuse Collection Delay

Due to severely cold weather, Waste Management will not be running any trucks on Wednesday, January 30 or Thursday, January 31.

At this time, garbage-only pickup will resume the following Friday, February 1 and will be completed by the end of Saturday, February 2. Please put out only your garbage receptacles by 6 a.m. on Friday.

Recycling will be picked up the following week (February 5 and February 6) on your regular collection day.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

With the current cold spell, it's important to take precautions against frozen pipes in your home. Check out the following tips to prevent your pipes from cracking and bursting:

Turn off and drain sprinkler/irrigation systems.
Identify areas in your home that are prone to freezing.
Know how to shut off your water.
Close off drafty areas.
Insulate or wrap heat tape around water pipes.
Keep cabinet doors open under kitchen/bathroom sinks.
Run water at a trickle with both hot and cold.

Report Power Outages to ComEd

With the dangerously cold weather moving in, ComEd has opened its Emergency Operations Centers, increased staffing levels and is closely monitoring the system to address outages as quickly and safely as possible.

In these severe conditions, ComEd is asking residents to report any outages or downed power lines immediately online, with the mobile app or via phone at 800.334.7661.
