Winter Storm Warning: January 18 - January 19

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Lake and Cook Counties from approximately 3 p.m. this afternoon to noon tomorrow. 5"-9+" inches of snow are expected north of I-88 with heavier snow possible near Lake Michigan. Snow is anticipated to fall at a rate of 1" per hour.

Travel tonight into Saturday will likely be very difficult and dangerous at times. Avoid any unnecessary travel during this time. If travel is required, use extreme caution and ensure that you are carrying emergency supplies in case you become stranded.

It is important to monitor the status and changes of the winter storm via weather broadcasts.

Snow Parking Regulations

Per Village ordinance, after an accumulation of 3 inches of snow, parking is prohibited on any street for 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling.

If snow removal is still needed after that period, parking is prohibited until operations are completed.

Prompt removal of snow is important in the Village of Deerfield. Our first priority is to keep all main streets open for emergency vehicles and residential use. Once this has been accomplished, our Streets Division then plows residential streets, followed by dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs and finally alleyways.

We ask all residents to help in the effort and not clear their driveways by returning snow to the street. Our objective is to maintain a safe and snow-free road system.

Sidewalk Snow Clearing Program

The Village asks all residents to be considerate of pedestrians and school children by keeping sidewalks clear of snow, ice and garbage and recycling carts.

After 2 inches of snow fall, the Public Works Department clears 24.12 miles of sidewalks throughout the Village. The route focuses on strategic locations that include the sidewalks along major thoroughfares like Deerfield, Waukegan and Lake Cook Roads and sidewalks around schools and Metra parking lots.

The sidewalk snow clearing program prioritizes keeping students and pedestrians safe and clearing snow from sections of sidewalk that are critical to public safety.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

Before the storm (Home):

Make an emergency kit for at least three days of self-sufficiency.
Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.
Make sure your home is well insulated and that you have weather stripping around your doors and window sills to keep the warm air inside.

Before the storm (Car):

Fully winterize your vehicle: Check antifreeze, brakes, heater and defroster, tires and windshield wipers to ensure they are in good shape.
Keep your gas tank at least half full and bring a fully charged cell phone with you.
Keep an extra emergency kit specifically created for your car. In addition to the basic essentials, consider adding a portable cell phone charger, shovel, ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction and jumper cables.

During the storm:

Stay indoors during the storm.
Walk and drive very carefully on icy sidewalks and roads.
Before driving, let someone know your destination, route and expected time of arrival.
If you lose feeling and color in your nose, ears, hands or feet, cover the exposed area, avoid rubbing your skin, and seek medical help immediately.
When shoveling snow, take breaks and lift lighter loads.
Stay dry.
