Deerfield Honors Juneteenth

Today, the Village of Deerfield honors Juneteenth — a day of freedom, reflection, resilience and hope.

As proclaimed by Mayor Shapiro and the Village Board, we join communities across the country in recognizing June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the day the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a call to remember. It invites us to reflect on our nation’s history, honor the strength and contributions of Black Americans and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more just, inclusive and united community.

Happy Juneteenth

Local Artist Spotlight Series at Deerfield Public Library

The Deerfield Public Library is hosting a new Local Artist Spotlight Series this June, featuring three artists in a program sponsored by the Deerfield Fine Arts Commission.

The series began on Tuesday, June 16, with resident and local artist John Calderon and continues on Tuesday, June 23, at 5:30 p.m. with resident Kimberly Perl.  Perl is a native Chicago artist who is inspired by the Pop Art style. She specializes in portraits, but her work also extends to sculpture, audio and textile art.

She worked as an elementary teacher before becoming a mother of three daughters.. Although always interested in arts and crafts, she did not begin painting until the COVID-19 pandemic. Perl has had her work shown at the Illinois and Houston Holocaust Museums. She has received a formal declaration from Mayor Shapiro for her women's portraits displayed for Women's History Month.

She is currently working closely with the Chicago Sinfonietta. Perl has had exhibits throughout the Chicago area, Texas and Michigan.

She has been commissioned for her pet portraits both nationally and internationally.

Registration is free and available online.

The series will continue on Tuesday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m. with Leslie Outten. All programs will be held at Deerfield Public Library in the downstairs A/B/C Room.

This informative series offers a chance for residents to learn more about local artists and their work while celebrating Deerfield’s creative community.
