Local Artist Spotlight Series at Deerfield Public Library
The Deerfield Public Library will host a new Local Artist Spotlight Series this June, featuring three artists in a program sponsored by the Deerfield Fine Arts Commission.
The series begins on Tuesday, June 16, at 6 p.m. with resident and local artist John Calderon. Born in Chicago in 1954, Calderon studied at Northern Illinois University, where he earned a BFA in drawing and painting and a BS in Art Education. He continued his artistic training through classes and workshops at The Palette & Chisel in Chicago, The North Shore Art League in Winnetka, and the Evanston Art Center.
Calderon works in a variety of mediums, including oils and acrylics on canvas, chalk and oil pastels on paper, and colored pencils and charcoal on paper. He has cited inspiration from artists including John Singer Sargent, Gustave Klimt, Egon Schiele, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and Frida Kahlo, as well as the art style of the Huichol Tribes of the Sierra Madre Mountains.
His career has included teaching art in Chicago Public Schools, working in graphic design, pursuing portraiture and fine art full time, and teaching classes from his studio in Niles. He later worked in interior design for a classic contemporary furniture company and now lives in Deerfield with his wife and dog.
Registration is free and available online.
The series will continue on Tuesday, June 23, at 5:30 p.m. with Kimberly Perl Friedman and on Tuesday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m. with Leslie Outten. All programs will be held at Deerfield Public Library in the downstairs A/B/C Room.
This informative series offers a chance for residents to learn more about local artists and their work while celebrating Deerfield’s creative community.
