Have a Spring Project? Get a Permit.

Planning a spring or summer home project? The Village’s Building Division is here to help.

In many cases, a permit is required if you plan to build, enlarge, alter, convert, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a structure.

Before you get started, consider scheduling a pre-construction meeting to talk through your project and any permit requirements. To make an appointment, email Building Division Supervisor Steve Cutaia at scutaia@deerfield.il.us.

Permits are processed entirely online through the Village’s paperless system. Once you’ve selected your contractors and finalized your plans, visit the Village website and complete the application for your project type.

A little planning now can help your project go more smoothly all season long.

Save the Dates: Spring Recycling and Compost Giveaway Events

The Village’s spring paper shredding, compost giveaway and electronics and textile recycling events give residents convenient ways to dispose of materials safely while reducing waste. Shredding helps protect personal information, recycling keeps electronics and textiles out of landfills and allows materials to be reused and compost supports healthier lawns and gardens while reducing the need for fertilizer. Together, these events help Deerfield residents protect the environment and keep the community clean.

•  Shredding Event: May 2, 9 a.m. – noon, at Public Works

•  Compost Giveaway: May 9, 9 a.m. – noon at the Metra parking lot

•  Electronics and Textile Recycling Event: June 6, 9 a.m. to noon at Public Works

Public Works flushing a fire hydrant

Fire Hydrant Flushing

The Public Works Department will be flushing all fire hydrants within the Village starting the week of April 13.  Opening fire hydrants and flushing out water on an annual basis allows Public Works to ensure that hydrants are in proper working condition to protect your property and helps to flush sediment out of the distribution system.

Signs will be posted in each area before flushing begins. The work is typically performed between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and takes approximately two weeks to be completed for the entire Village. There may be discoloration in the water coming from the faucets in your home after hydrant flushing is complete in your area. It is recommended that residents flush water from their interior system through a tub spout for a few minutes to clear out any potential sediment. Do not use a sink for flushing purposes as it is possible that sediment can become trapped in a sink’s aerator. Please note that the water from the tap is safe to drink at all times.

Contact the Public Works Department at 847.317.7245 for more information.
