Bitter Cold Weather to Hit the Region

Bitterly cold temperatures will arrive Saturday night through Tuesday night. The coldest conditions will be Sunday and Monday nights with wind chills of -15 to -25 below zero expected, locally wind chills may drop as low as -30 F. Frostbite is possible within about 30 minutes in these conditions.

People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to frostbite and can succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes. The best way to avoid hypothermia and frostbite is to stay warm and dry indoors and outdoors. If you must go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Trapped air between the layers will insulate you. Remove layers to avoid sweating. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded. Wear a hat because much of your body heat can be lost from your head.

If you or someone you know is without heat due to a power outage or other circumstances, the Deerfield Police Department (850 Waukegan Road) is a designated warming shelter and is open 24/7. Should the need arise, additional warming facilities will be made available. Be sure to check on your neighbors and the elderly.

Deerfield Supportive Living Facility

Yesterday, Mayor Shapiro joined Celadon Partners and local officials for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Deerfield Supportive Living Facility. The $70 million facility, at 1101-1121 Lake Cook Road, will replace an office building with a new four-story structure featuring 147 affordable units for seniors. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

LRS Tree Collection

LRS will continue non-artificial tree collection through Wednesday, January 22, on your regular collection day at no added cost to residents. Please do not put the tree in a plastic bag and be sure to remove all tinsel, lights and ornaments. If the tree is over 6 feet tall, it should be cut into two pieces. Trees must be placed at the curbside. Real wreaths without wire are also accepted.

Due to snow and ice, trees may not always be taken on your primary service day, but LRS drivers and trucks will be in the community for the majority of the month making these pickups.
