Compost Your Pumpkins

Remember to compost your pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns once Halloween is over.

LRS will accept pumpkins under 50 pounds. Pumpkins should not be adorned with anything, have wax in them or be painted, as they may not be able to be composted under these conditions.

Electric Bike Regulations Education

With electric bicycle (e-bike) popularity on the rise, it’s important to note the differences between e-bikes and traditional bicycles. E-bikes and e-scooters have electric motors that, in combination with pedaling, makes them faster than traditional bicycles. They weigh substantially more than traditional bicycles and are generally not as responsive when needing to evasively turn or brake quickly. They can have varying types of controls for speed and come with gear selection, as well as front/rear brakes, the function of which requires familiarity to synchronize and operate safely. These differences require practice before you may feel comfortable taking your e-bike on the road.

In the interest of safety for e-bike riders, motor vehicle drivers and pedestrians, e-bike riders should be smart and cautious while operating their bikes. Be sure you and your loved ones familiarize yourselves with the laws, regulations and responsibilities that come along with owning and operating e-bikes in the Village of Deerfield. E-bikes have different classifications with different rules for each, and it is the rider’s responsibility to know what class their e-bike falls in and the appropriate Illinois Vehicle Code and Village Municipal Code.

Education and awareness targeting e-bike users, particularly younger riders, could help mitigate the risks associated with e-bike operation. It’s crucial to prioritize safety to protect yourself and others on the road. For more information, visit the Illinois Secretary of State Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety website.

Don't Place Political Signs in Right of Way

Political Sign Regulations

During the political campaign season, the Village wants to remind residents about regulations for placing political campaign signs, or any signs, on your property.

Permits are not required for temporary signs, and residents can place any number of political signs on their property as long as the aggregate gross surface area does not exceed 20 square feet. Any signs in the public right-of-way will be removed without notice.

Signs must be:

  • on private property;
  • at least 5 feet from the house side of the sidewalk;
  • at least 10 feet from the house side of a carriage walk; and
  • at least 15 feet from the street edge or back of curb if no sidewalk.

Signs must not be:

  • placed in the public right-of-way;
  • attached to trees, traffic or light poles, utility poles or fire hydrants; or
  • higher than 10 feet above curb level.

If you have any questions regarding the Village's regulations, please contact the Community Development Department at 847.719.7484. View a printable flyer of the regulations.
