An Independence Day Message from Mayor Shapiro

As we approach the 4th of July and Deerfield Family Days celebrations, I wish each and every one of you a safe and happy holiday. July 4th marks the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted and the United States officially became its own nation. We acknowledge and celebrate our country’s birthday with festivals, parades, fireworks, barbecues and other fun activities.

The founding fathers were united by a belief in a simple truth: that we are all created equal, that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. With that, they founded our nation with courage and wisdom. Their contribution to the success of our nation cannot be overstated.

It has been said that success can be measured by courage, judgment, integrity and dedication. These criteria help focus us on our goals and allow us to set aside the day-to-day inconveniences that can distract us from our purpose.

In Deerfield, we can take great pride in the accomplishments we have achieved over the years. Our community is resilient, courageous and has an unwavering commitment to inclusivity. Looking ahead, we have the opportunity to further our community’s growth and inclusivity. In the coming months, we will consider development projects that could add up to 500 new homes across various locations in the village, catering to different income groups. These projects will create positive impacts for both our current and future businesses, reflecting our commitment to welcoming new residents and fostering a thriving, diverse community.

I am proud that our Board has continued our commitment to being a kind and welcoming community. This is evident in our advocacy for affordable housing regulations, our recent proclamations recognizing Pride Month and Juneteenth, and our ongoing efforts to assist those in need, including individuals with mental illnesses and dementia. We have also made significant progress towards reducing our carbon footprint in just a few short years, showcasing our dedication to sustainability. These achievements are not just those of the Board but are shared by all of us, as a community.

Let us ensure our future successes by renewing our spirit of dedication to Deerfield. We can do this by getting together at Family Days, visiting the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings or enjoying our food truck nights. Let’s commit to kindness and respect for everyone, so we can all continue to take pride in our community's successes. I am proud to call the Village of Deerfield my home. Together, let’s build a future we can all be proud of and live up to the words of our founding fathers.

Leave Fireworks to the Professionals

Reminder that it’s best to leave the fireworks to the professionals. One good way to do that is by attending Deerfield Family Days. The spectacular fireworks show will be held Wednesday, July 3rd, at Shepard Park with live entertainment and kids’ activities.

Fireworks are dangerous and unpredictable by nature and discharging of fireworks (including firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles) is a violation of State law and Village ordinances. Also keep in mind that backyard fireworks displays can be a nuisance to your neighbors, especially those with young children, pets, and people living with PTSD and sensory sensitivities. The Deerfield Police Department enforces the local ordinance and State law where applicable.
