Family Days Canceled, Fall Celebration Planned
After much consideration, the Village of Deerfield has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s regular Family Days festivities and instead hold a large community celebration later this fall. We anticipate more residents will have had the opportunity to have been vaccinated by then and will feel more comfortable being in crowds.
As the name implies, Family Days is a family event and it is important for all families to feel safe at a large-scale event that spends taxpayer dollars. This decision is based on CDC guidance to ensure ample time for residents to get vaccinated and everyone to feel comfortable attending, as vaccinations for children 12 to 15 have only recently been approved.
Under current State guidelines, capacity limits would restrict participation. Village community events should be open to all residents. For these reasons we expect to hold a fireworks display this fall along with live music and other family activities.
“We understand this decision will receive mixed reactions from residents,” said Mayor Dan Shapiro. “While feedback is always welcome, please know this decision was made with the best interests of our residents in mind and the Village’s desire to bring our community back together in person in an atmosphere where all families feel safe and all are welcome without capacity limitations.”
More details about the fall events will be released shortly.
