Give Where You Live - Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Give Where You Live

The Village of Deerfield invites everyone to participate in a “Day of Service” in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Join us at Village Hall (850 Waukegan Road) on Monday, January 20, from noon to 2 p.m. for service projects appropriate for all ages including collecting and sorting items, assembling care packages, writing letters and cards of encouragement and other activities.

Starting now through Monday, the Village is collecting non-perishable food and toiletries, socks, travel-sized hygiene products, gift cards, lip balm and warm clothing. Collection boxes can be found in the Police Department (open 24/7) and Village Hall lobbies.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Anne Glowacz, Police Communications Director, at 847.794.7501 or by email.

Winter Weather Reminders

Snow Removal

Keep Sidewalks Clear

The Village asks all residents to be considerate of pedestrians and school children by keeping sidewalks clear of snow, ice and garbage and recycling carts.

We also ask all residents to help keep roadways and walkways safe by not clearing snow from their driveways into the street or sidewalks. If you have a private service clearing snow for you, please inform them of this request.

After 2 inches of snow fall, the Public Works Department clears approximately 24 miles of sidewalks throughout the Village. The route focuses on strategic locations that include the sidewalks along major thoroughfares like Deerfield, Waukegan and Lake Cook Roads and sidewalks around schools and Metra parking lots.

View the sidewalk snow clearing routes here. For questions or concerns, contact the Public Works Department at 847.317.7245.

Hydrant

Adopt-A-Hydrant

The Village of Deerfield recently launched a new program to ensure that firefighters can access fire hydrants during an emergency. In the winter months, heavy snowfall makes finding and accessing fire hydrants difficult for firefighters, and during an emergency every second counts.

The Village is asking residents, business owners and community groups to consider participating in the new Adopt-A-Hydrant Program. Participants get to name their hydrant to show their commitment to public safety.

Snow

Snow Parking Restrictions

To make sure the Village's snow removal crews can effectively do their jobs and keep our roads safe and passable, remember that parking on the street after 2" of snowfall is prohibited by Village ordinance.

Help Neighbors

It is important to check on your neighbors and the elderly during this time. Do you have an elderly or disabled neighbor who may need assistance with snow removal? Check up on them or offer assistance if you can.

The Village's TeenConnect program can also relieve residents who are unable to remove snow themselves. Get more information here

Perform Car Maintenance

Make sure your car is ready to be on the road. Clear all snow from the top of your car and your windshield, rear windshield, lights, mirrors, windows and doors. Perform winter maintenance like replacing antifreeze, replenishing your emergency kit and checking brakes, tires, windshield wipers and defrosters.

Frozen Pipe

Prevent Frozen Pipes

With cold weather here to stay this season, it's important to take precautions against frozen pipes in your home. Check out the following tips to prevent your pipes from cracking and bursting:

  • Turn off and drain sprinkler/irrigation systems.
  • Identify areas in your home that are prone to freezing.
  • Know how to shut off your water.
  • Close off drafty areas.
  • Insulate or wrap heat tape around water pipes.
  • Keep cabinet doors open under kitchen/bathroom sinks.
  • Run water at a trickle.
For issues regarding a frozen water meter or service line, contact Public Works at 847.317.7245.
