Spraying & Odor Removal

Defense Mechanism

Skunks are a slow-moving, non-aggressive breed with a poor sense of sight, smell, and hearing. If threatened, the skunk will arch its back, raise its tail, and stamp the ground with its front feet. If these warnings are ignored, the skunk will turn around and twist its body in to a U-Shape and spray the attacker up to 10-20 feet away with an odorous musk. Though the musk is not harmful to health, it can be detected up to 20 miles away.

Odor Removal

The University of Illinois Extension recommends:
  • Mix 1 quart 35 hydrogen peroxide solution, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap
  • Do not add water
  • Use the solution to wash skin, clothes, dogs, etc. Please note that the peroxide may lighten your pet’s fur.
