A Message From Mayor Shapiro

Martin Luther King Day, this Monday, is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Normally we would host  the Give Where You Live – Deerfield event at Village Hall, but it was cancelled due to the surge in Covid-19 cases. Instead, I encourage residents to find a different way to give back this year. Perhaps a donation to your favorite charity, a donation to the West Deerfield Township food pantry, or drop off much-needed warm clothes at the Jewett Park Community Center for Monday’s Cradles to Crayons collection. You can find details of the event here.

Another way to serve the community is to get fully vaccinated and  encourage your loved ones to do so as well. In Lake County, 79.1%  of residents age 5 and older are fully vaccinated, but another 12.7% have received one dose and only 46.6% of those 18 and older have received a booster. Maybe they have been busy, or maybe they just forgot, but friendly encouragement from someone they trust could go a long way.

Dan
